David Ward-Steinman appears as composer and performer on four recent CD releases since October, 2006:
1. His DUO FOR CELLO AND PIANO, originally recorded on LP by Edgar Lustgarten, the cellist who commissioned it, and John Williams, piano, has been reissued on CD by Orion Marquis. www.marquisclassics.com
2. He appears as piano soloist in Brent Heisinger's EKTA (for Solo Piano, Solo Percussion-Indian tabla, jazz drumset and bass, -and String Orchestra) with the San Jose Chamber Orchestra, Barbara Day Turner, conductor, on a CD produced by the San Jose Chamber Orchestra. There is improvisation on a raga, then in jazz, then a cadenza, all supported by the rest of the ensemble. www.sdjo.org
3. This CD of two-piano jazz recorded in Australia with Tony Gould has just been released in the United States. John Barns reviewed the disc in 3MBS Libretto Magazine, August/September 2007:
Long regarded as one of Australia's greatest-ever jazz musicians, Tony Gould on this recording is joined by American David Ward-Steinman and the result is music-making of continual excellence.
The two longest pieces on the disc, the world premiere recording of a suite by the French pianist/composer Martial Solal and in Memorium by the Modern Jazz Quartet's John Lewis (also a world premiere recording in this format), receive captivating treatment. The former's constant changes of mood and rhythmic complexity hold no terrors of execution for these great pianists. I have often thought that Tony Gould's cool-headed approach to music-making, his mastery of improvisation and subtle use of the sustaining pedal show the influence of the MJQ, so that his treatment of Lewis' In Memorium, in partnership with his American colleague, makes for compelling listening. The beautifully played shorter pieces, including two attractively jaunty works by Ward-Steinman, add to the delight of this splendidly recorded disc. -- John Barns A CD of two-piano jazz recorded in Australia with Tony Gould has just been released in Australia by MOVE records: www.move.com.au It includes two originals, SKYLINE and UNDER CAPRICORN. (Premiere recordings of extended two-piano jazz works by Martial Solal and John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet are also included, along with originals by Tony Gould and some jazz standards.)
Leon Gettler of "The Age," Melbourne, Australia; April 5, 2007, observed: "Gould, one of Australia's finest pianists, teams up with American composer Ward-Steinman, the closest thing the music world has to an intellectual."
4. Finally, a short "Christmas card" for orchestra, SEASON'S GREETINGS, has been recorded by the Kiev Philharmonic under the direction of Robert Ian Winstin and released on a double-CD "Holidays of the New Era" by ERMMedia. www.numusic.org
